According to the government gender-based violence is the biggest security issue in the African country. Most of the victims have been killed by men they knew, including partners, authorities said.

Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office, Musalia Mudavadi, said that many cases are still under investigation in the courts.

Mudavadi announced that the police have developed a plan for the protection of Kenyan women that includes the creation of a special unit to address femicides, which are gender-based murders.

President William Ruto has urged the police to investigate these cases. Ruto pointed to the fact that four out of five women killed were victims of intimate partner violence, which means that they are not safe in their own homes.

Since September 2023, 7,107 reports of sexual and gender-based violence have been recorded in Kenya. According to a November UN report, Africa had the highest rate of intimate partner-related femicides in the same year.
